Ryan Daley (Green Wave Marine Services) and Marlin & Ryan Hanson (Hanson Land and Sea) evaluated the damage to the wharf on Jan 25. They concluded that a minimum of nine pilings need to be installed (including the dolphin), as well as two or three new 12×12″ horizontal beams under the wharf platform. The two pilings to be replaced closest to shore can’t be reached by a pile-driving barge and need to be dug in and back filled. In addition, the platform needs to be lifted and slid back into place, and the 9″ lag bolts and rebar previously used to anchor the wharf platform to the superstructure need to be replaced with drift pins and angle iron.
The required rebuilding requires heavy equipment and expert construction experience and is therefore beyond the ability of our community volunteer labour. The GWA we will be contracting the services of Green Wave to do the pile driving and much of the heavy duty wharf repairs, and Andrew Nadler (Keats Island Construction) to dig in the two pilings and help with the re-positioning of the platform.
B. Schedule & Cost
Green Wave has a full work schedule for the entire spring and we were very concerned that our wharf work might be delayed for months! But fortunately (for us), the Green Wave project scheduled for the first week of February was postponed by the client and Ryan Daley put our project in that spot! So preparation is underway now (as of Friday Feb 1), the onsite work will commence on Monday (Feb 4), and this part of the rebuild should be completed within the week!
Marlin Hanson and Andrew Nadler will be at the wharf on Monday (Feb 4) to plan and schedule the remaining work. Andrew has said he can also get started soon.
Once the heavy rebuilding is done, the GWA will organize volunteer work parties to repair the wharf deck and railings, and replace the ramp deck as previously planned. Stay tuned…
We expect that the total cost of the Wharf Rebuild Project will be $30,000 to $35,000.
C. Fundraising
The Granthams community has responded generously with donations of $12,010, with additional funds pledged.
We continue to appeal for support from GWA members and friends who are able to donate. (see offers below and visit our donate page for details)
In addition to community fundraising, the following fundraising initiatives are underway (the lead GWA board member is included for each initiative – please contact them if you want more info or can help):
Jan Poynter (Granthams resident) has generously offered to provide an original painting to each donor who contributes $2,000 or more to the Granthams Wharf Rebuild Project before March 31.
Please let us know if you can make such a generous donation and would like a painting (also available to those who have already made a donation of $2,000 or more)
– Format is 12″ x 16″ (horizontal) on deep gallery wrap canvas, ready for hanging on your wall
– Each colorful painting will feature and celebrate Grantham’s Wharf – see example below from GWA site; for other samples of Jan’s work, visit janpoynter.com or @jan.poynter on Instagram
– The donor will receive their original painting (valued at $1,000) by the end of July, and a tax receipt for the balance of their donation in January 2020 (or the donor can choose to forgo the painting offer and get a receipt for the full amount)
– The reproduction copyright for each painting will be granted to the GWA by Jan, allowing for a scanned image of the painting to be used on future fundraising merchandise such as cards, prints, calendars, or mugs
2. Community Fundraising Concert – Saturday March 16, 6-10pm
David King has booked various musicians to participate in this fundraising concert. Please mark it on your calendar – Saturday March 16, Gibsons Public Market – see the invitation at the top of this page for details. Please invite your friends!
– become ‘Homerun’ members of the GWA (highest level annual membership donation).
– pledge a donation of $200 from each sale they complete between January and June (inclusive)!
– will match donations made during February and March, up to a total value of $2,000! <– anything you donate between now and the end of March will be matched !!
We have been invited (by Chris Wolfe, President-Elect and Granthams resident) to make a presentation at the local Rotary club in mid February with the hope the Rotary will assist us with fundraising in the lager community.
The GWA is currently completing an application to be submitted to the SCRD asap. The official deadline is March 29th, however we may be able to have our application fast-tracked due to the immediate nature of our need. The maximum grant from this source is $5,000.
The GWA is exploring a grant application to the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation. The application process opens February 1 and closes February 28th. Successful applicants will be notified on June 1.
A few people have asked about the feasibility of an insurance claim against the wharf damage or a portion thereof. But this seems unlikely as we have liability insurance only. We have reached out to the insurance company to confirm.
D. Thanks!
Trials and tribulations, although stressful, seem to bring out the best in our community and its members. On behalf of the GWA , we would like to thank:
– Ryan Daley (Green Wave Marine Services) for his expert help and being willing and able to get our project started quickly
– Andrew Nadler (Keats Island Construction) for his quick response and interest in helping with the rebuild work
– Marlin & Ryan Hanson (Hanson Land and Sea) for their expert advice and help, and generous in-kind contributions
– Bjorn Enga for his great energy and help in getting the rebuild project organized and moving forward
– All 33 GWA members who have already contributed to the wharf rebuild project
– The community-minded folks engaged in each of the fundraising initiatives above: Jan Poynter, David King, Nicole Arnett, Chris Wolfe, and their colleagues – THANK YOU !
Wharf Rebuild Project Report – December 2018
1. Assessment
During the recent wharf reconstruction project (2011-2015), about 75% of the former structure was replaced. To keep the material and heavy equipment costs within the available budget, we kept the remaining 25% in place, especially since they seemed to be in good order. However, it appears that these older wharf components sustained the greatest damage:
Six pairs of support pilings –> most of these have been completely knocked out or at least pushed out of place
The heavy 50′ x 6′ platform (at the sea-ward end of the wharf) –> pushed out of place by a few feet, almost right off its supports, pulling most of its 9-inch lag bolt anchors clear out of the beams. It is currently detached at both ends and is teetering on its center beam.

The Coast Reporter article stated a ballpark repair estimate of up to $25,000. This may be short, simply based on the number of pilings that need to be installed (at approximately $3,000 each, just the dozen pilings alone could cost as much as $36,000). We will let you know as soon as a reliable estimate is available.
2. Response
The GWA response will be organized in at least two parts: Stabilization and Rebuilding
2.1 Stabilization
The wharf is currently in a precarious position… parts of the platform are sagging badly, held up primarily by their attachment to adjacent parts of the platform. Others are teetering freely on their cross beams. The next storm would decimate what’s left of the wharf, battering the remaining pilings and cross beams and likely shoving the rest of the platform off that structure onto the foreshore and into the sea. So this part of our response must be immediate.
Yesterday (Saturday Dec 22), Eric Hammond used his work boat to slide the heavy sea-ward platform back towards its original position – thanks to Bjorn for arranging!

Other marine construction contractors have been contacted in our effort to stabilize the wharf and shore it up against other winter storms (which we have to assume are unavoidable, seeing as how the winter storm season has just begun). Bjorn is taking the lead on this effort – much appreciated by the board (especially since Tony, Nicky, and Anna are away over the holidays). Anyone in the community that can provide support, please reply to this email message or contact Bjorn directly (mobile: 604-837-4622).
2.2 Rebuilding
As stated earlier, we will ramp up our fundraising and volunteer labour efforts to make the necessary repairs to have a more secure wharf ready for the summer season. A number of pilings need to be replaced, and up to four more new ones could be installed under the heavy platform. Old beams should be replaced, and much of the decking will need to be refitted. This is on top of the ramp resurfacing we had already planned (which must still be completed), and the Dolphin renewal project (which may need to be postponed for another year, unless we can raise enough funds to fold it into this year’s rebuilding project).
3. Funding
As mentioned above, we are in immediate needs of funds to cover the stabilization efforts outlined above. This needs to happen ASAP, ideally within the next week or two. To date, four Granthamites have offered, without solicitation, a total of more that $6,000 in donations for wharf rebuilding. In the longer term (2 to 3 months), we will need to raise substantial funds for the actually rebuilding. Besides appealing to YOU and the rest of our community, the board is researching external funding sources: Rotary, SCCF, Federal grants for Heritage Sites, etc…
ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE! If you are willing and able, please e-transfer your donation before next Monday 31 Dec 2018, or date your cheque on or before 31 Dec 2018. Details on the Donate page. Tax receipts will be sent by email in late January.
